SCOTTISH COUNCIL FOR VOLUNTARY ORGANISATIONS
01 Feb 08 Compact Development in South Lanarkshire
Under the auspices of the South Lanarkshire Community Planning Partnership, with the support of the three local CVS, a wide range of voluntary and community sector representatives met last week to consider the need for and benefits of developing a compact with the CPP ‘s public sector partners. Following presentations from Martin Sime, Luska Jerdin of the Third Sector Unit, and Liz McEntee from GCVS the participants broke into workshops to explore what was wanted from a compact and how the process to develop and implement such an agreement might proceed. The outcomes of the workshops, a cautious agreement that development work and associated research should continue - resourced by the public sector partners, will be reported to the March meeting of the CPP.
24 Jan 08 OSCR Aiming to Work with CVS
Scotland's charity regulator is looking to reinforce its working relationship with the CVS network in 2008, starting with a major mailing in the next month. OSCR is to issue new guidance on the ‘Charities References in Documents (Scotland) Regulations 2007’ to every Scottish charity. Supplies of material will be sent to each CVS for reference and to allow further hard copies to be available to any local charities that require them. This move follows feedback given to OSCR by CVS members at the Regulator's roadshows in 2007; and a commitment given by OSCR on this matter at its conference in September 2007.
14 Jan 08 OSCR Consults on Charity Test

12 Oct 07 The Cattanach Charitable Trust Pioneers Online Funding
The Cattanach Charitable Trust is one of Scotland’s smaller grant-making trusts but has made the leap into the 21st century ahead of many of its larger sister trusts, by launching an online application form today. Many trusts have websites and application forms which can be downloaded and e-mailed by organisations seeking funding. Cattanach has gone one better in enabling applications to be made and stored online, with applicants having their own secure account and being able to make changes to their application up to the point at which they send it electronically to the Trust. While the application can still be filled in by conventional methods, the Trustees very much hope that organisations will use the online facility and will let the part-time Assessor, Alison Campbell, know how they find the experience....

06 Sep 07 EVOC Short-listed for Third Sector Excellence Awards
Edinburgh Voluntary Organisations’ Council (EVOC) has been short-listed for a national award from London-based Third Sector magazine, proving that as well as being caring and responsive, the Capital’s Council for Voluntary Service also delivers tangible benefits, punching well above its weight. Third Sector, ‘the UK’s leading publication for everyone who needs to know what’s going on in the voluntary and not-for-profit sector’ is now running the third round of Third Sector Excellence Awards, and EVOC is one of just three groups nationwide short-listed under the ‘Best Use of a Compact’ category.
22 Aug 07 Excellence in Education – promoting the Third Sector to schools
SCVO along with Careers Scotland is piloting a teacher placement programme this autumn across Scotland. We are looking for organisations to offer to host a teacher for only one day, and to help them to understand more about our work. The teachers would spend the inside of a working day with an organisation, finding out about its work, and then write up a “case study” which will be posted on the Good Moves recruitment site. Before the placement day, SCVO will organise a half day seminar for the teachers to give them an introduction and background to the sector and after the placement day, they will all come together with SCVO again, to share their experiences and round up the programme. Organisations would be welcome to join us for either or both of these half day seminars. This is a brilliant opportunity to showcase what your organisation is doing, and to spread the word to a whole new audience.

19 Jul 07 Scottish Executive - Departmental Changes
Following the May elections to the Scottish Parliament and the appointment of a new First Minister and Cabinet Secretaries, there have been a number of changes within the Executive’s former Social Justice Group in general, and the former Social Inclusion and Voluntary Issues Division in particular. The Executive’s Departments have been replaced by groups of Directorates. There are 5 Directors General, each with responsibility for the delivery of a strategic objective and for management of a number of Directorates. Within this new structure the responsibilities of the Social Inclusion and Voluntary Issues Division have been realigned as follows....
16 Jul 07 Great Resources Available for Charities and Community Groups
The headquarters of BBC Scotland in Glasgow is shortly moving from its long-time home at Queen Margaret Drive to a new site at Pacific Quay. As a result there is existing office furniture, electrical items and catering equipment which will not be required in the new premises. BBC Scotland would like to see charities and community groups benefit wherever possible from these available resources. The e-catalogues detailing the resources available can be accessed through the Online Library in the newly created category of BBC Resources for Charities and Community Groups. Ideally the agents helping clear the building would like to work in allocating larger numbers of items and groups who only require one or two items can come together with others to make requests. This will be very beneficial when it comes to the fact that recipients would be expected to collect items as banding together can help on covering relevant transport costs including meeting health & safety requirements. All requests for items must be received by Friday 17th August 2007. All requested items must be removed from the BBC site no later than 24th August 2007. (....read on)

This Angus based steering committee, set up to help people bereaved by suicide, hosted two initial meetings in Arbroath during May. The aim of the initiative is to help develop support for people affected by the loss of a loved one through suicide. As a result of the interest shown by those who attended the recent meetings in Arbroath, the Samaritans are hosting a follow-up meeting on July 19th at 7 pm in the Volunteer Centre, Guthrie Port, Arbroath. Representatives from AAVO, The Samaritans, CRUSE Bereavement Care Scotland, NHS Tayside and Choose Life make up the steering committee and they have welcomed the high level of interest in this initiative.

John Davidson, Executive Officer of Islay & Jura CVS was delighted to welcome the First Minister Alex Salmond to Islay recently and, along with Islay resident Rebecca Brown, presented the First Minister with the Halls for All petition. 11 Jun 07 THE QUEEN’S AWARD FOR VOLUNTARY SERVICE 2008
The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service 2008 is to recognise outstanding voluntary activities by groups in the community. A group (two or more people) can be nominated for an award if it has been working in the UK for a minimum of three years and has a majority of volunteers as its members. Groups solely concerned with fundraising for charitable purposes are not eligible, while the closing date for nominations is 30 September 2007. You can find out more about The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, including details of the organisations in Scotland which received awards last year, online.
